Aug 13, 2026 2 min read Curator Studio Initiative Curator Studio Visits Continue to Foster Meaningful Dialogue As part of SSNAP’s off-island curator and local artist studio visit initiative, curator Jesse Birch of Nanaimo Art Gallery recently visited the studios of Salt Spring artists Eli Horn, Lexane Rousseau, and Barb Tipton. These visits provide artists with the opportunity to share their work in depth with visiting curators, encouraging meaningful dialogue, professional feedback, and new perspectives, while strengthening connections between Salt Spring’s artistic community and institutions across the province. For Eli Horn, the visit was both rewarding and invigorating. “It was a privilege to host Jesse Birch in our studio. His feedback was thoughtful, articulate, and critically engaged in the best sense. Sharing work with a curator so willing to immerse himself in the ideas behind it was both refreshing and energizing. His insights into presenting the work and speaking about it were invaluable. Opportunities like this are rare, and I’m deeply appreciative of the experience.” Lexane Rousseau echoed the value of the conversation and the opportunity to reflect on her practice. “I really enjoyed the studio visit with Jesse Birch. He asked thoughtful questions and offered observations that challenged me to think differently about both my work and how I talk about it. It was a valuable opportunity to discuss the work, the process, and the ideas behind it, and to have an open conversation about how much context to offer the viewer. I found the visit incredibly worthwhile and would welcome the chance to do it again with new work in the future.” For Jesse Birch, the visits offered an opportunity to reconnect with artists whose work he has followed, while discovering more of Salt Spring’s vibrant arts community. “Eli Horn and Lexane Rousseau were recipients of the Catalyst Grant, and having served on the jury for that program, it was especially rewarding to see the tangible impact it has had on their practices. It was clear the grant gave them the opportunity to push their work in exciting new directions, with highly successful results. Our conversations were thoughtful and engaging, and I hope the artists found them as valuable as I did. It was also a pleasure to visit ceramic artist Barb Tipton. We had in-depth discussions about her practice and its relationship to ceramic traditions, and I came away with an even greater appreciation for the depth of work being created on Salt Spring Island. I truly value opportunities like these to learn more about the remarkable artists working in the community.” SSNAP extends its sincere thanks to Jesse Birch for taking the time to visit these artists and share his insight. Studio visits like these are an important part of our ongoing commitment to supporting artists through meaningful professional connections and critical dialogue beyond the exhibition itself.
