It was inspired by a stunning Ballet BC performance of Petite Ceremonie (Medhi Walerski) which reflected the struggle for equity in modern relationships. I introduced a third dimension to that dynamic by moving the ensemble to a place where simply surviving supersedes winning: the landscape of Long Beach with its ancient trees, mist and sand. A helicopter hauling a fire bucket and gulls fighting off a marauding eagle are additional metaphors for the two biggest challenges we face in our ultimate struggle for survival as a race. The bike gave me the freedom to venture out into the world and the paints to speak my truth. Much has changed since then, but not my heart and soul’s need to ride bikes and to share my voice through paint. I’m a figurative painter who uses landscape and deeper abstraction to contextualize that genre.
