Meet Bao, the shoemaker, in his cramped Victoria workshop. This image depicts the highly skilled artisan in his space, littered with materials, off-cuts, lasts, and the devices of his trade. This image is an evolution of a series of historical images that portray contemporary artisans and community members in their own workspaces. The image speaks to the strength and persistence of contemporary artisans as future figures of historical significance. This image comprises a piece of an archive of a story that aims to identify central community members as an integral part of a collectively constructed archive of place.

Seb Evans is an emerging artist from Salt Spring Island who received his BFA from Concordia University in 2017. He uses drawing and print-based work to explore ideas surrounding identity, power, and history. His work focuses on labour, marginalized populations, and our relationship to the people, land, and communities where we live. His artworks become an archive that both re-interpret historical photos and utilize present-day images in order to explore stories of personal, national identity, and belonging.
