Yarn and threads on mesh canvas

The top half represents my married life: planned, detailed, compartmentalized. Beautiful, yet not quite perfectly matched. The devolving of the marriage involved sorrow and fear, followed by unexpected vitality and creativity.

Carol starting stitching in high-school home economics. Her first project was a needlework scene of deer in a forest. Forty years later, she saw a needlepoint kit, a bouquet of roses, hanging from a haberdasher's window in Cadiz, Spain. She opened the kit in her trailer in Point Roberts, and started stitching while listening to a book on tape. She lasted five small stitches in tidy high-school needlepoint, then her hands took off creating ungovernable swirls and not-quite-real flora. She collected yarns and threads from thrift shops and let them pile up in a colourful and soft heap on her bed. She found some blank mesh, and with one needle, combined embroidery, crewel, needlepoint, and weaving. Her process doesn't have a name; she calls it wooly work. Each piece takes six months.
