Dimension

63" x 18" x 18"

Médium

Ceramic, underglaze, glaze, steel base

My ceramic sculpture “It’s Not Dark Yet (But It’s Getting There)” borrows its title from a Bob Dylan song to invoke Kali Yuga (the Dark Age of Hindu cosmology) and the collapse of the Roman Empire — analogies for our own Dark Age of disinformation. Its many eyes all see a different reality; tongues sticking out in the four directions misunderstand one another. But all is not lost — yet. While each bead (each self) is separate, the sculpture shows them (us) to be intimately interconnected, and ultimately dependent on one another.

Karen Reiss is a ceramic artist who lives on Salt Spring Island. She’s been working in ceramics for close to twenty-five years. Her sculptures have been described as whimsical and playful, but with underlying social, political, and spiritual concerns. Her new work, while still content-driven and symbolically rich, pushes the boundaries of clay as a representational medium. Her work is in collections in Canada, the United States, and Europe.
