The guard is part of a tribe of mutant herdsmen who are responsible for taking care of a herd of horses, half of which are equally transformed. Along with their caregivers, the altered horses are damaged, abject and vulnerable, and epitomize the grotesque. The unfolding narrative is purposely enigmatic.
