“Cat’s Eye/Cat’s Eye Verso” playfully echoes the work of Zeuxis and Parrhasius, believed to be the early Greek originators of the trompe l’oeil tradition. “Cat’s Eye/Cat’s Eye Verso” suggests, with a smile and a wink, that viewers are simultaneously seeing the front and back of a painting of 21st century glass marbles, a 15th century pre-Columbian vessel and a weathered 17th century Dutch frame. The diptych references the conventions of 20th century photorealism and northern European still life painting, as well as the rich and ongoing tradition of trompe l’oeil painting.
