When she isn't painting, McCann works in a candy shop, moshes at hardcore shows, or devours intersectional feminist discourse at home in Calgary. McCann's painting practice concentrates on themes of female self-identity through spectatorship, and analyzing relationships between social power, constructed space, and memory. She characteristically employs psychedelic optical tricks or novelty materials to draw unsuspecting viewers into exploded personal narratives about anxiety and self-preservation against a flashy pop culture backdrop. Abstract expressionist influences become suggestive and subversive when mixed with her unshakeable punk aesthetic. Her work documents emotional responses to systemic force while glittering and glowing in the dark.
