“Bad Weekend” is a study of how memory, trauma and spectatorship culture affect private space. Glow-in-the-dark elements stand in for the radiation of past happenings, while layers of whitewashing and patchwork embody ongoing self-editing and healing. Bad Weekend invites viewers to consider what makes a personal event private, public, or political—all while wondering, “What happened here?”

Born in 1989, Caitlin is in her fourth year as a painting major at Alberta College of Art + Design, and was chosen for the Painting Third Year Award in 2015. When she isn't painting, McCann works in a candy shop, moshes at hardcore shows, or devours intersectional feminist discourse at home in Calgary.

McCann's painting practice concentrates on themes of female self-identity through spectatorship, and analyzing relationships between social power, constructed space, and memory. She characteristically employs psychedelic optical tricks or novelty materials to draw unsuspecting viewers into exploded personal narratives about anxiety and self-preservation against a flashy pop culture backdrop. Abstract expressionist influences become suggestive and subversive when mixed with her unshakeable punk aesthetic. Her work documents emotional responses to systemic force while glittering and glowing in the dark.
