It’s Not Dark Yet (But It’s Getting There) Karen ReissSalt Spring Island, BC Dimension 63" x 18" x 18" Médium Ceramic, underglaze, glaze, steel base My ceramic sculpture “It’s Not Dark Yet (But It’s Getting There)” borrows its title from a Bob Dylan song to invoke Kali Yuga (the Dark Age of Hindu cosmology) and the collapse of the Roman Empire — analogies for our own Dark Age of disinformation. Its many eyes all see a different reality; tongues sticking out in the four directions misunderstand one another. But all is not lost — yet. While each bead (each self) is separate, the sculpture shows them (us) to be intimately interconnected, and ultimately dependent on one another. She’s been working in ceramics for close to twenty-five years. Her sculptures have been described as whimsical and playful, but with underlying social, political, and spiritual concerns. Her new work, while still content-driven and symbolically rich, pushes the boundaries of clay as a representational medium. Her work is in collections in Canada, the United States, and Europe.
