Married and single Carol NarodSaltspring Island, BC Prix de l'artiste de Salt Spring Dimension 20" x 14" Médium Yarn and threads on mesh canvas The top half represents my married life: planned, detailed, compartmentalized. Beautiful, yet not quite perfectly matched. The devolving of the marriage involved sorrow and fear, followed by unexpected vitality and creativity. Prix de l'artiste de Salt Spring Married and single Carol NarodSaltspring Island, BC À propos de l'artiste À propos de l'artiste Carol NarodSaltspring Island, BC Carol starting stitching in high-school home economics. Her first project was a needlework scene of deer in a forest. Forty years later, she saw a needlepoint kit, a bouquet of roses, hanging from a haberdasher's window in Cadiz, Spain. She opened the kit in her trailer in Point Roberts, and started stitching while listening to a book on tape. She lasted five small stitches in tidy high-school needlepoint, then her hands took off creating ungovernable swirls and not-quite-real flora. She collected yarns and threads from thrift shops and let them pile up in a colourful and soft heap on her bed. She found some blank mesh, and with one needle, combined embroidery, crewel, needlepoint, and weaving. Her process doesn't have a name; she calls it wooly work. Each piece takes six months.
