“Transmission” is a painting from an ongoing series I am developing entitled “Stars and Satellites.” “Transmission,” like several pieces within this series, is a stylized, playful, yet introspective piece that expresses a sort of child-like perspective of contacting through a void. I wanted to keep the manner of painting light, yet purposeful, and this I developed through careful composition and subtle variations of contextual elements. Utilizing the linear element of the vast horizon line and big sky gives an enormity of space to the contextual background, which amplifies a sense of isolation where human communication is precariously tethered.

Doug Smith was educated at the University of Manitoba in sculptural ceramics. In 1996, Smith transitioned to two-dimensional work that eventually led to a 14-year, large-scale, multi-series drawing project entitled “Catharsis.” Premised on visual spectacle, the drawings referenced arena architecture and radar screens in diagrammatic form as a visual stage to weave varying narrative themes. This work initiated multiple series of multi-media watercolours and paintings, with which Smith is currently involved. Smith has been the recipient of several Manitoba grants and a Canada Art Council grant, exhibiting primarily within Canada and the United States. Examples of exhibition galleries include Aceartinc, The Cleveland Sculpture Center, Plug In ICA, and Stride Gallery. Smith is currently a Vancouver resident.
