My miniature architectural interiors explore how we perceive and interpret reality. Each sculpture suggests a journey. However, the destinations are unknown and the progression from one point to the next seems convoluted, disorienting, and misleading. Nevertheless, it is through these confused wanderings that we find an opportunity to question notions of hope and despair.

Erika Dueck is a Manitoba based artist living in a small community south of Winnipeg where she makes work that explores ideas about building, destruction, decay, and renewal. Time is an important component in Dueck’s work process, as her slow methodical approach leads to detailed and precisely made art objects. Her current sculptural work utilizes simple materials and craft techniques to create architectural miniatures that play with illusion. She completed her MFA from the University of Guelph in 2016 and received her BFA with honours from the University of Manitoba in 2013. Her work has received several awards, including SSHRC, the National Winner of the BMO 1st Art! Invitational Student Art Competition, and recognition as one of eleven winners in the UNESCO Chair in Bioethics and Human Rights Global Art Competition. She has had the opportunity to exhibit her work across Canada in Winnipeg, Montreal, Toronto, and Nova Scotia, as well as globally, from Texas, to New York and Rome. Dueck teaches sessionally at the University of Manitoba’s School of Art.
