It functions as both a portrait and a self-portrait in its depiction of the artist actively creating. Stylistically, the work pays homage to the paintings of Dorothy Knowles by choosing to leave visible the charcoal under drawing and by using angular brush strokes to define special planes. Sunday Afternoon Courtney ClintonMontreal, QC About the artist About the artist Courtney ClintonMontreal, QC Hailing from Toronto, I began sculpting at a young age with my father. In my early twenties, I spent two years working in Italy as a translator. There, I encountered the work of Europe’s great masters. Seeing this art first-hand revitalised my interest in art and shortly after, I started self-publishing a webcomic. This opened the door to my drawing and painting practices. Interested in the work of Montreal’s modern impressionists, I now live in la Belle Province where I continue to develop and expand my art. The guiding principle of my art is the need to work from life. My main practices are painting and drawing and my primary subject is portraiture. My work is a return tothe modern expressionist tradition and speaks directly to the art of Richard Diebenkorn, Peter Doig and Dorothy Knowles. Follow on social
