“Sending Signals” is a mixed-material painting that explores the idea of becoming. Starting with a fragment—whether imagined or photographic—the painting lives many lives through a cumulative process of making and unmaking. I consider the fluidity between interior and exterior spaces and the performance of looking within the home. Conjuring generations of mothers whose physical labour was often more pronounced and immersive, I integrate repetitive gestures like scrubbing, stitching, and arranging as methods for making paintings. Something is being done and undone and re-done, and out of that futility emerges something continuous and forming.
