Encaustic with oil pigment and Graphite on birch panel

My process starts with an overall grid and circle composition. This ground becomes a foil against which I can push at its boundaries with the aim of holding to the pattern, but disguising its presence through the play of shapes, colour and texture. My use of encaustic, an ancient medium of painting with bees wax and pigment, endears me to the traditional craft of painting. I am interested in exploring the blurred boundaries of craft and fine art; aesthetics and decoration.

Rosalie grew up in Toronto. In 1982, she received her BFA in studio art from NASCD University. She completed a diploma in film production at the London International Film School with a distinction in script writing in 1987. Rosalie lived in England for the next 17 years, working part time in film while raising her children. In 2001, she moved back to Canada and returned to a visual art practice. Rosalie has always experimented with the surface quality of her work. When she discovered encaustic medium, she was hooked on its rich translucency, textural possibilities and sheer physical presence.
