This work is the realization of a commonly used metaphor for depression – ‘the black dog’. Most often associated with Sir Winston Churchill, who once described the dog’s absence by saying, “He seems quite away from me now – it is such a relief. All the colours come back into the picture.”

About the artist

Mike Bernard’s photographs explore the relationship between humans and the natural world and often treat the landscape as a reflection of internal states. His work over the last 30 years has focussed on nature in its most pristine state and the intersections where human involvement in the landscape becomes apparent. His first monograph Recorded Like This (2014) considers commonplace scenes where nature is shown in relation to human activity. In his more recent work New Landscape and Horizon Lines the emphasis is on the experience that nature induces in the viewer.
