NDN Aunties Michelle SoundBurnaby, BC Size 72" x 48" Medium Drums made of denim, leather, rabbit fur, unframed “NDN Aunties” is a tribute to Auntie Culture: leather jackets, neon fur, and animal print stretched across drum frames. These drums, unplayable, much like the tough women they are inspired by, act as both tributes and self-portraits. Our aunties are also our mothers, who take care of us, our ‘cool’ moms. More often than not, our aunties are our first style icons, the loud aunties with the big laugh, who take us to the mall. This series is inspired by their timeless auntie style. NDN Aunties Michelle SoundBurnaby, BC About the artist About the artist Michelle SoundBurnaby, BC Michelle Sound is a Cree and Métis artist. She is a member of Wapsewsipi/Swan River First Nation in Northern Alberta and was born and raised on the unceded territories of the xʷməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish) and Səl̓ílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Simon Fraser University, School for the Contemporary Arts, and a Master of Applied Arts from Emily Carr University Art + Design. She has taught workshops as a guest artist at the Richmond Art Gallery and Bill Reid Gallery. Michelle has upcoming exhibitions at the Art Gallery of St Albert and Daphne Art Centre (Montréal).
