By the time this painting was complete I’d lived in this imagined landscape for days. It became a self-imposed search for the essence of a place which was not meant to be a traditional landscape but rather to move into deeper layers of meaning. Colour plays a huge roll in defining mood, flow, energy. After walking through the forest these strange vegetal forms often surface as part of a story which is completely rooted in nature. As I watch forests disappear because of human and climate factors I’ve chosen to try and capture their deeper beauty.

Barbra Edwards

Barbra Edwards creates contemporary landscapes that slip in and out of recognizable images. Her paintings reference nature, though her interest is to depict the emotions of being within a landscape rather than presenting it as a scene. Edwards’ highly refined colour sense adds to her sensuous storytelling, and fluid movement of line and brushstroke share how the painting was made.

Edwards lives and works on Pender Island, BC. She studied Photographic Arts at Dawson College in Montreal and majored in Photography and Design at Ryerson University (now Toronto Metropolitan University). Barbra has exhibited with Winchester Galleries, Victoria, British Columbia; Bugera Matheson Gallery, Edmonton, Alberta; and Canadian Fine Arts, Toronto, Ontario.
