Early Morning At Waddington Bay

Size

16.25" x 17.25"

Medium

Linocut

The early morning hour gives me a glimpse of what will emerge later. The fog rolls across the water, the light and colour changes, and the layers in the water emerges as the morning progresses. I think how the start of a day is like the beginning of a life. How we emerge, changes we go through, and our surrounding environment moulds who we are, just as a peaceful morning can affect our outlook for the day. This reduction linocut print evolves like the day as each colour layer is cut away, printed, and repeated until it too is finished.

Mimi Fujino has been printing for over 25 years. She also bends a single length of wire to create sculptures. She earned a BFA degree in drawing/painting at Pacific Northwest College of Art in Portland, Oregon.

Mimi tries to draw you into an open scene with her prints. Her wire sculptures are of people and animals, sometimes interacting. Both mediums produce that element of surprise whether pulling a print and watching the scene develop as each colour is printed or bending wire and seeing the characters emerge. Inspiration comes from Tom Killion, Sue Charles, Alexander Calder and Saul Steinberg.
