Drawing is the language I use when I want to contemplate beauty.
Multiple lines forming tone, capturing shape and shadow.
A single line delineating the dignity of fabric while whispering the curves underneath.
Lines bonding into an island of pattern.
The chaos that is hair.
These marks enrich and balance.
The temporal dimension of the pose, the contemplative devotion to truth, bring me closer to those gods I value.

About the artist

Martin Herbert was born in Calgary. He earned a BFA from the University of Calgary where he was fortunate enough to have Dirk Van Wyk as a drawing teacher and mentor. Martin sold everything he owned to live in Paris for a year, reading, thinking, and drawing before returning to Calgary to build scenery for the theatre. Retiring to Salt Spring, he reads, thinks, sails, draws, and makes objects that interest him. These objects include, but are not limited to, boats, books, and interactive sculptures.
