Better City, Better Life No.2 Xin HeRichmond Hill, ON Size 16" x 24" Medium Inkjet Print Edition 1/20 The artist has been using photography to record changes along the Huangpu River, Shanghai, reflecting cultural shifts between 2005 and 2009. The land was designated as the site for the 2010 Shanghai World Expo by the state of China. The original sites known as “old industrial base” and “old Shanghai” no longer exist. In their place, temporary buildings—Expo pavilions—have been constructed. In the post-Expo period (2011–present), this site has gradually transformed into one that integrates offices, supermarkets, and other spaces. Better City, Better Life No.2 Xin HeRichmond Hill, ON About the artist About the artist Xin HeRichmond Hill, ON Xin He (何欣) is a photographer living in Toronto. He studied architecture at Tongji University in Shanghai, China; photography with Patrick Zackman (a member of Magnum); and photography and film technology at Ryerson University and OCADU. He also completed an advanced Historical Processes workshop on Wet Plate Collodion Tintype at the George Eastman Museum House in 2017. He has had several solo exhibitions in the Shenyang International Documentary Photography Festival and the PinYao international Photography Festival. His work has focused on night clubs in Shanghai, the 2008 Sichuan Earthquake, the No.3 Steel Farm, and the historical Silk Road in China. Since arriving in Canada, his photography projects concern the development of land north of Toronto.
