A Home’ draws attention to the everyday mundane object, and while reminding us of the profusion, collection and accumulation of possessions, arranged carefully and intimately it conveys that we can create our own place. Weldable shiny items from one home are used to create another, prompting reflection on the undervalued, underpaid labour at the source of these objects and the complex, varied meaning of ‘home’ to so many. Sharp edges poke at the uncomfortable reminder that for many the acquisition of a home is becoming more difficult—if not impossible. This work is a cross-examination of consumerism and personal identity.

About the artist

Peter McFarlane
Salt Spring Island, BC

Peter McFarlane is an award-winning artist based on Salt Spring Island whose work is in public and private collections nationally and internationally. He is infatuated with the traditions of “the found object,” “the readymade,” and recycling.

Over his career he has worked in a wide variety of mediums, particularly in the repurposing of used objects. What connects all of his work is the re-contextualizing of obsolete everyday objects to create personal philosophies which he hopes will resonate with the viewer on a visceral and/or intellectual level and open up the possibility of a new conceptual experience. He relies on long hours, personal experience, history, landfill, metal recycling and serendipity to make his art.
