Woven paper textile: Warp: digital image on paper cut 10 ends/inch; weft: cotton & holographic threads. Mounted on Cradled Panel

Woman with Bottle is a digital reproduction of my mother, circa1953/4. The artless spontaneity of a ‘snapshot’ fascinates in this age of the hyper-posed ‘selfie’. This work employs Saga Nishiki (Japanese paper weaving technique) to interweave non-traditional materials and subject matter. I’m eternally curious to observe how the experience of looking past the ‘interference’ of existing image, interrupted with woven structure, functions as a metaphor for the transient nature of memory. The fragility of woven paper connotes our human vulnerability to time and life’s processes; holographic thread reflects the spectrum of light, evoking a sense of the numinous, the sacred Qi.

About the artist

Linda Brine
Waterloo, Ontario

Originally from Stratford, Ontario, Linda holds a BFA (Honours) from University of Windsor and a certificate in Adult Education from University of New Brunswick. She has worked and volunteered in/for the cultural sector throughout her career. While drawing had been her OG studio passion, the revelation of weaving at the ‘Craft School’ (now NBCCD) in Fredericton, NB changed the trajectory of Linda’s artistic path. Most significant was her discovery of Saga Nishiki which has become the foundation and inspiration of her practice of woven paper textile now spanning nearly thirty years. Linda pursues her woven paper textile explorations out of her loft space in uptown Waterloo, Ontario.
