Cherry twig and caning on a brass and oak cradle
My fascination with the relationship between humans and plants has led me to work that explores the disassociation between so many of us and the natural world. As a creative and maker, I have developed a deep connection with plant fibre. The dialogue that has arisen between material and maker has given rise to a slow methodical practice that has evolved from creating solely traditional basketry to objects of art and sculpture. I create contemporary sculptures that lend texture, beauty, and a sense of calm to our living and working spaces.

Ralph SimpsonFredericton, New Brunswick
Ralph Simpson resides in Fredericton and works full time in his studio there. He chooses to work with locally sourced, sustainable materials. He forages his own plant fibres employing environmentally sustainable methods and prefers invasive or introduced species of plants. Ralph holds an MSc. from UNB in Forest Research Biology, and a Diploma in Fine Craft from NBCCD. Informed by the sciences and his acquired technical expertise, his intricately woven pieces reflect the fields and forests around him. The flora of New Brunswick informs his work and his creative process. His process results in a contemporary manifestation of his connection with plants in their natural habitat. His work varies in form and style but what resonates in all his work is an underlying investigation into ways that plant materials can be used to spark interest and insight into the natural world.
