THE MATT STEFFICH JURORS’ CHOICE AWARD $3,000 Sponsored by Windsor Plywood Salt Spring Diana Sanderson Salt Spring Island, BC “Fragile Reflections” “This work employs unconventional uses of materials and processes to recreate the beauty of the underwater environment in the air. I used gut, iron, silk, and twigs and exposed them to indigo (a living natural dye and air to get rust) to capture the translucence of seaweed beneath the surface. The twofold objective of this work is to explore the natural properties of the materials and help the viewer appreciate the complexity and fragility of the aquatic world. If I can convey that understanding through my work, I hope it will assist in encouraging the preservation of that environment.” www.silkweavingstudio.com/diana-sanderson.html Read more VIEWERS’ CHOICE AWARDS – 1st prize $2,000 Donated by Michael Whitfield Garry Kaye Salt Spring Island, BC “frosty field” “As a landscape painter, I strive to share the experience of common place vistas that we might overlook or take for granted. My observations involve long and careful studies of an image. I paint winter images paying attention to depth and especially the with long rays of sunlight on frosted bushes.” www.garrykaye.com Read more VIEWERS’ CHOICE AWARDS – 2nd prize $1,500 Sponsored by Country Grocer Sibéal Foyle Salt Spring Island, BC “Hanna on a Tripod” “The 2021 Fairy Creek Blockade was a historic act of civil disobedience, uniting many Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities against the devastation of old-growth trees in British Columbia’s last untouched valley outside of national parks. Creating an image of a braver self I manipulate charcoal, a medium of burnt wood, onto paper crafted from pulp. Shifting, erasing, and revising, the act of drawing is a physical document of human touch. Wearing red plaid, a tartan legacy steeped in the history of a revolutionary past, she embodies an outsider’s desire to take a stand, once and for all.” www.sibealfoyle.com @sibealfoyleart Read more VIEWERS’ CHOICE AWARDS – 3rd prize $1,000 Sponsored by Country Grocer Jane Kidd Salt Spring Island, BC “Inheritance: Gown 3” “I am interested in the relationship between human activity and the natural world. The world around us has long provided a source for design. I continue this practice by referencing the realities of a changing environment, creating pattern drawn from industrial decay and derelict environments. The images are derived from human-created surfaces like rusting metal, crumbling concrete, abandoned brick paired with natural phenomena like mould, spores, lichen, and moss. I use a symbolic reference to a garment as a surrogate for the human body. Here the object/garment is child sized to evoke the inheritor of our uncertain future.” www.janekidd.net Read more
