Coptic binding, found milkweed seed pod, Himalayan lotka paper naturally dyed with lac, linen thread
This artist’s book, made from milkweed seed pods, symbolizes the delicate transformation from seed to Monarch butterfly. The milkweed, essential to the Monarch’s life cycle, reflects nature’s process of growth and metamorphosis. The seed pod, small yet significant, embodies the power of potential. Just as milkweed nourishes and protects the Monarch, books serve as vessels of insight, growth, and transformation, offering the potential for personal metamorphosis. Through this work, I explore the interconnectedness of nature and the profound impact of small, seemingly insignificant moments in sparking change.

Debra Frances PlettWinnipeg, Manitoba
Debra Frances is a book artist whose sculptural works explore the intersection of nature and narrative. Using foraged and natural materials, she creates unconventional books that challenge traditional forms. Trained in classic bookbinding, she earned her Core Certificate in Book Arts from the Minnesota Center for Book Arts in Minneapolis and has studied with several master bookbinders. Her technically grounded, experimental approach treats the book as a tactile and conceptual art form. Debra’s artists' books have been exhibited nationally and internationally and are held in major special collections across North America.
