Though I never shopped there, I found myself surprisingly saddened by the closure of this iconic establishment. I spontaneously took photos of the gutted interior through the side windows and subsequently painted the image over several months. Applying layers of acrylics carefully was my tribute to hundreds of souls who once frequented the space. Hopefully my viewers experience their own memories and imaginations awaken. The lonesome dragon mural left behind, then, may become not a past relic in ruins but symbolic of a new beginning. Fascinated by North American cities as subject matters, he began painting professionally since the mid-1990s. A self-taught, award-winning hyper-realist painter, Tad’s original acrylic canvases are in numerous private and corporate collections, locally and internationally. His work is included in Patricia Bovey’s recent comprehensive overview of Western Canadian art, and Western Voices in Canadian Art (U of Manitoba Press, 2023). After many years in Victoria, Tad now works from his home studio overlooking Montague Harbour on Galiano Island, British Columbia. Tad is currently represented by Plus One Gallery (London, UK).
