Alexandra Phillips teaches Visual Art and Critical Studies at EmilyCarr University. Her practice merges art and anthropology in whichshe holds degrees from the University of Washington. A contributor toCanadian Art, C, and Fuse magazines, Alex has received numerousawards including Canada Council and BC Arts Council grants. Her in-terests include the role of comedy and the carnivalesque in social re-generation, and she counts among her mentors the 19th centurysatirist Honoré Daumier. Her current research focuses on “dialogicsculpture,” a proposal to allow outdated historical sculpture to enterinto a dialogue with the present.What is it about human beings that we persist in making objects thatdo nothing but reflect us back to ourselves, but refuse to say whatthey have seen?
