Whether we give it any degree of thought at all, our personal information is being aggressively data-mined by increasingly sophisticated algorithms. The amaWal Cube, expressed in part by the enormous quantity of cardboard packaging inundating our lives, questions what could happen if powerful tech and e-commerce giants, in their relentless pursuit of our data, become too powerful. Who would be in control then?

Anne Winter is a self-described urbanist with a particular interest in how the design of cities impacts daily life. She is a graduate of the Ontario College of Art and Design and Ryerson University where she obtained a degree in interior design and a certificate in architectural technology. Using a wide variety of building materials in the construction of her work, Anne delves into topics such as density, transit and heritage preservation; more recently isolation and loneliness as experienced by a growing number of people as we transition from a manufacturing-based economy to a knowledge-based economy.
Anne considers each piece of work to be a chapter in an ongoing story that examines and interprets issues that cities face. It is a story she began some thirty years ago with observations about urban design that were of interest then. Some of those issues are still relevant today.
