Work by Judy Anderson winner of SSNAP 2017

And her son Cruz Anderson

Opening reception Thursday, September 19, 5-7pm.

Reception for the artists Friday, October 18, 5-7pm.

Organised especially for SSNAP 2019 we are proud to have in the Gallery an exhibit celebrating the work of Judy Anderson, the winner of SSNAP 2017, together with the work of her son Cruz Anderson.

Judy Anderson’s prize winning entry for SSNAP 2017, This one brings me the most pride, comes back to Salt Spring and is given context with additional pieces made before and after 2017. These include There is life in there, a depiction of the four Cree directions: North (white), East (yellow), South (red), West (blue), which Judy began while on Salt Spring for her prize-winning residency. This series was most recently exhibited at La Guilde in Montreal, one of Canada’s oldest art galleries to exhibit Indigenous Craft, as part of “ Beading Now” described by the press as “a stunning display of contemporary artistic practice”.

Judy Anderson and Cruz Anderson

Judy continues to teach Canadian Indigenous Studio Art in the Department of Art at the University of Calgary. Her work continues to be deeply personal, created with the purpose of honouring the people in her life and Indigenous intellectualizations of the world. She continues to collaborate with her son Cruz Anderson using his graffiti designs in much of her beadwork.

Judy’s support of Cruz’s work, and her own interest in traditional European methods and materials, has helped him consider art beyond letters and to incorporate that knowledge into other forms of 2D rendering. This exhibit includes some of his early graffiti showing the energy and exuberance that sparked Judy’s own creative impulse, together with two of his earliest portraits, now a major interest as he continues his studies.

Show runs until Sunday October 20.

Open Thursday-Monday 1pm-5pm, or by appointment.
