Hinged take off, from the recent ongoing body of work Departure, explores the interaction between the illusory space of a painting and its substrate; the painted 3-dimensional space departs its support and exposes the bare surface. This results in a dimensionally and structurally ambivalent object that demands engagement.

About the artist

Atefeh Baradaran

Throughout her career, Atefeh Baradaran has explored various disciplines including painting, drawing, and sculpture, all of which continually inform her practice. In her recent work she explores the interplay between the minimally painted three-dimensional space, the flatness of the surface on which the painting exists, and the inherent frame enclosing it all. Her paintings present colourful geometric compositions that sit in contrast to the background. This creates an image that appears to be in motion or exist on a different plane. Her compositions reveal a tension between foreground vs background, two vs three dimensions, and the inside vs outside of the frame.

Atefeh holds a BFA from Emily Carr University of Art + Design (2016). She was nominated for the IDEA Art Award in 2015 and selected for a juried exhibition by Burnaby Art Council in 2016. Her work is published in the most recent issue (Summer 2019) of Create! Magazine.
