The histories of queerness have been largely invisible and hidden, sometimes by design. To create future relics from my own experiences is to make that history tangible – to provide concrete (ceramic) evidence of a queer world that once existed and will always exist. This body of work is atmospherically fired using reactive colorants in the clay body: clay as glaze. The colors melt, crystallize and invert during the firing. These pieces together weave threads of queer histories and tactile sculpture into a tapestry of beauty and power that lies in the act of resistance and the celebration of queer identities.

Etty Anderson
Montréal, Québec

Etty Anderson is a multidisciplinary queer artist whose focus is ceramic arts. Sitting on the outside of the traditional education framework, their practice embraces the interplay of tradition and experimentation, while positioning their work as a lens through which to explore themes of identity, history, class, and material culture. Etty has shown works in both North America and Europe, most recently in Paris for the Craft Biennale in 2023. They are a finalist for the Winifred Shantz Award 2025 and just completed a yearlong artist in residence at Medalta. As part of a relational practice, Etty runs an underground supper club spanning almost two decades and both coasts of North America. Etty is a non-binary trans, white Canadian settler. They live and work in Tiohtià:ke Québec.
