Observers are encouraged to look very closely: figures and colours merge and dissolve at the same time. My brushstrokes and the relationship between colours are a celebration of the sensuality of oil paint. I mix a new colour for each brushstroke on the canvas. Her work moves between figuration and abstraction: an investigation of the sensuality of oil paint and the life it depicts. She works alla prima in oil, her canvases created by layers of oil paint. The intricate balance of colour is essential to her work. But her real gifts reveal themselves in her imagination, an array of subjects—migration, family history, deracination, and tragedy: the varied responses to the world and to the people who dwell in it.
