The inspiration comes from the solidity and refined elegance of predynastic Egyptian stone carved vessels. The bowl is hand built using clay slabs and coils to make a closed form after the clay dries to leather hard it is pierced. The holes enliven the surface. Some are dark and some let light through, making one aware that the form is hollow. It appears both heavy and light. The clay’s surface alludes to an object that is weathered and has developed a patina over a long period of time.
