The skeleton of driftwood that washed up on the shores of Lake Cowichan holds time in every grain, every shadow, every creature that looks out from the forest bones in wood. There is a wolf looking back at you. Can you see him in the burl? Light changes, evening skies transform the wood, opening a portal, revealing the embers. The lone grey wolf is not lost. This work is dedicated to Takaya, the lone sea-wolf who was shot to death by a cougar hunter on Vancouver Island March 24, 2020. Prior to his death, Takaya suffered ten broken ribs following a heavy rainstorm. His ribs were healing well, discovered upon autopsy. His name, Takaya, is the Saanich First Nation word for wolf.
