Oil on canvas
I am a visual artist and trained architect based in Vancouver, originally from Newfoundland & Labrador. My practice merges the disciplines of architecture and painting. I create large-scale architectural abstractions in oil paint. I’m fascinated by how the built world encodes our desires, fears, and memories – how architecture can become a vessel for the emotional and sensory life of people, and how architecture holds traces of our presence. Early surrealist painters used architecture to evoke psychological states, and like them, I see space not merely as a physical container, but as a reflection of inner experience.

Taryn SheppardVancouver, British Columbia
Taryn Sheppard is a Vancouver-based visual artist and architect (M.Arch, University of Toronto, 2010; MFA, Emily Carr University, 2020) originally from Newfoundland & Labrador. Her painting practice draws on architecture as a subject, creating large-scale oil works that explore how built space encodes memory, emotion, and human presence. Using physical and digital models, she constructs fictional environments that become sources for paintings characterized by ambiguity of scale, light, and atmosphere. Influenced by surrealism, expressionist cinema, and science fiction, her work treats architecture as a psychological landscape. Sheppard has exhibited widely, received multiple awards, and teaches as sessional faculty at Emily Carr University.
