Hand woven and knotted. Mounted on painted canvas. This piece documents Rachel Carson’s fight against the indiscriminate use of DDT (sold, falsely, as ‘safe’ by the chemical industry) and celebrates the legacy of her book Silent Spring, published in 1962, which swayed public opinion against the widespread use of pesticides leading to the creation of the environmental movement. The first and last sections of the apocalyptic poem Darkness by Byron have been translated into morse code and knotted into the hanging threads. The form was inspired by paleolithic string skirts and pre-conquest Incan quipus, a counting system which was a kind of protowriting.
