Alluvial fans formed by silt carried by creeks are veined with capillaries that feed into arterial rivers. The spillage and circulation of water and earth erode and deposit in turn. Through slow, handsewn embroidery, I aim to capture this process. My work evokes the tactile nature of the landscape and personal encounters with place. Signs of climate change – from overt to subtle –show in leaves turning colour earlier in the season and patches of dead trees from spruce beetle kill. These relentless changes make me feel anxious. Addressing nature through the opulence of hand embroidery, she values the versatile language of textiles. Matzkuhn holds a BFA and an MA from Simon Fraser University and is the recipient of Canada Council and British Columbia Arts Council Grants. She has exhibited across Canada, as well as in Korea, Mexico, and the USA. Her work is found in national public collections such as the Surrey Art Gallery, Cambridge Art Gallery, and the Weldon Map Library at Western University.
