Mounted on Cradled Panel Woman with Bottle is a digital reproduction of my mother, circa1953/4. The artless spontaneity of a ‘snapshot’ fascinates in this age of the hyper-posed ‘selfie’. This work employs Saga Nishiki (Japanese paper weaving technique) to interweave non-traditional materials and subject matter. I’m eternally curious to observe how the experience of looking past the ‘interference’ of existing image, interrupted with woven structure, functions as a metaphor for the transient nature of memory. The fragility of woven paper connotes our human vulnerability to time and life’s processes; holographic thread reflects the spectrum of light, evoking a sense of the numinous, the sacred Qi.
