I love mudrooms. They appear ‘unspecial’ but they are the places where we decide to open the door and step out into world as much as they are the places in which we pause, shed the layers of the day and pass through into the calm waters of our homes. I see a sense of honesty and necessity in mudrooms, and it draws me in. Inside out, and outside in.

About the artist

Sal Wiltshire
Salt Spring Island, BC

Sal is a painter working primarily with oils and wood. She lives on the traditional territories of the Coast Salish people, splitting her time between what is commonly known as Hornby Island and Salt Spring Island.

Sal has been an artist since the beginning. Observing the world around her and creating artwork as a process of reflection is something that has always felt natural. After some time away from art—during which she pursued two degrees in history and a degree in education—Sal has come back to painting. Colour, mood, and depth are key aspects of her work and combine to draw the viewer into the intimate moment between person and place reflected in each painting.
