Deep Covid Kazmear JohnstonSalt Spring Island, BC Size 24" x 12" x 10" Medium Ceramic, rocks “Deep Covid” is a sculpture made of clay harvested from a construction site in Deep Cove on Vancouver Island. It was made on a kick wheel and bisque fired in my previous home studio in Victoria, BC. This piece was made during the depths of isolation in the early days of the Coronavirus pandemic (2020). “Deep Covid” explores the collective feelings of this time. Its cracks, which are created from working with natural unsifted clay with rocks and random pieces of anything embedded, create imperfections, which are in truth its perfections. Johnston is an emerging interdisciplinary artist from Salt Spring Island, BC, currently living and working on Salt Spring Island. He is interested in the body, the land, and the environments in which he inhabits. Kazmear holds a visual arts diploma from Camosun College and a BFA from Emily Carr University of Art and Design. While attending the visual arts program at ECUAD, the influence of the environment and his body within this environment have shaped and molded the materials he chose to use, forming this most recent body of work. Kazmear incorporates his knowledge and education from all disciplines of life into his art practice. He appreciates the importance of change and the acceptance of it. Knowing the impact of the audience, Kazmear is very open to conversations around the work, specifically the meaning put into the pieces and the meaning viewers get out of them. Follow on social
